Hello. / Hi.
-
Mar7aba. / Hala. (مرحبا. / هلا.)
Arabizi uses numbers as substitutes for Arabic letters that have no direct Latin equivalent. This system emerged in the 1990s when mobile phones lacked Arabic keyboards. The numbers were chosen because their shape resembles the Arabic letter they represent.
These seven numbers are the core of the Arabizi writing system. Each number visually resembles the Arabic letter it represents.
| Number | Arabic Letter | Name | Sound | Example |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | ء | Hamza | Glottal stop (like the pause in "uh-oh") | 2ahlan = أهلاً |
| 3 | ع | Ain | Deep voiced pharyngeal (no English equivalent) | 3arab = عرب, 3id = عيد |
| 5 | خ | Kha | Like Scottish "loch" — guttural kh | 5air = خير, 5alid = خالد |
| 6 | ط | Ta emphatic | Emphatic/deep T sound | 6ayyib = طيّب, 6abib = طبيب |
| 7 | ح | Ha emphatic | Voiceless pharyngeal — breathier than H | 7abibi = حبيبي, 7elo = حلو |
| 8 | ق | Qaf | Deep uvular Q (back of throat) | 8al = قال, 8ahwa = قهوة |
| 9 | ص | Sad emphatic | Emphatic/deep S sound | 9aba7 = صباح, 9a7 = صح |
Modifier: Some writers add a prime mark or apostrophe after a number to indicate a related but different sound. For example, 3' or 3a = غ (ghain, the voiced equivalent of خ), and 7' = خ (an alternative to using 5).
These two-letter combinations represent Arabic sounds that can be approximated using Latin letters.
| Arabizi | Arabic Letter | Name | Sound | Example |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| sh | ش | Shin | English "sh" as in "shop" | shukran = شكرًا, shams = شمس |
| kh | خ | Kha | Guttural kh (same as 5 above) | khalas = خلاص, khamis = خميس |
| gh | غ | Ghain | Like a French R — voiced guttural | ghurfa = غرفة, ghadan = غدًا |
| th | ث | Tha | English "th" as in "think" (voiceless) | thalatha = ثلاثة |
| dh | ذ | Dha | English "th" as in "the" (voiced) | dhalik = ذلك |
| ts / tz | ظ | Dha emphatic | Emphatic voiced dental | tsuhur = ظهور (less common) |
Note: Spelling varies by dialect and writer. Gulf (Saudi/UAE) Arabic, Egyptian, and Levantine (Lebanese/Syrian) users often write the same word differently in Arabizi.
Arabic has three short vowels (diacritics rarely written) and three long vowels. In Arabizi, long vowels are written out while short vowels are often omitted or approximated.
| Arabizi | Arabic | Type | Sound | Example |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| a | فتحة (fatha) | Short vowel | Short "a" as in "cat" | katab = كَتَب |
| i | كسرة (kasra) | Short vowel | Short "i" as in "bit" | kitab = كِتَاب (with long aa) |
| u | ضمة (damma) | Short vowel | Short "u" as in "put" | kutub = كُتُب |
| aa / a: | ـَا (alef) | Long vowel | Long "aa" as in "father" | 9aba7 = صَبَاح, bab = باب |
| ee / ay / i | ـِي (ya) | Long vowel | Long "ee" as in "see" | habibi = حَبِيبِي, beit = بيت |
| oo / aw / ou | ـُو (waw) | Long vowel | Long "oo" as in "moon" | yoom = يوم, 6oul = طول |
